DOMINIC BEATTIE

My output is quite varied, I make paintings, sculptures, drawings and sometimes furniture. All my work is exploratory in nature, I develop new processes regularly. Some of the techniques I return to include, stencilling, block printing, spray painting, assemblage and collage.

“I like to look at design and domestic objects for inspiration, I find it more exciting than looking at fine art now. Elements of architecture, textiles and ornamentation have been very influential recently.”

I often use materials that are close to hand, studio detritus or found materials. Many times my work is made from more industrial paints and surfaces, or things found in the hardware shop. I like to use non-conventional art materials as they compliment my aesthetic.

I work in a new studio very close to my house in Lewisham. It’s in a small mews with a couple of other craftspeople. My neighbours are upholsterers and they do a lot of stitching for me, I think that relationship has made working with textiles a lot more possible and opened up opportunities for furniture making that I wouldn’t have explored otherwise.

Dominic Beattie studied Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Art. He has recently had work exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery, and The Royal Academy and had solo shows at JGM Gallery, Fold Gallery and The Hospital Club.
